FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 6, 2025 | Shelbyville, Indiana

The City of Shelbyville, in coordination with Shelby County Emergency Management Agency-Indiana and the American Red Cross, has officially closed the temporary evacuation shelter at the Shelby County Fairgrounds following the recent severe weather event and flood risk.

This decision follows careful evaluation and confirmation that all individuals who sought or indicated a need for emergency shelter have safely returned home. All necessary services were provided, and there are currently no outstanding shelter requests or known unmet needs.

“We are grateful for the swift, coordinated efforts of our emergency response partners that ensured every resident was cared for,” said Mayor Scott Furgeson. “Closing the shelter at this time allows critical resources to be repositioned, while remaining ready should conditions change.”

The City recognizes that residents may have questions or concerns about this decision. It is important to note:

  • The shelter was closed only after all known needs were met.

  • City and emergency management personnel remain on alert and ready to respond.

  • This decision does not reflect a lessening of concern or vigilance.

The City of Shelbyville continues to monitor local river conditions and public safety developments through official National Weather Service gauges on the Big Blue and Little Blue Rivers.

“We remain committed to the safety, communication, and care of all residents,” added Mayor Furgeson continued “Should the need for temporary shelter or other emergency support arise again, we are prepared to reopen resources quickly and efficiently.”

Residents with lingering concerns or who need assistance should contact Shelby County Emergency Management Agency Director, Denis Ratekin, at 317-392-6308.
