[ARCHIVED] City of Shelbyville Provides Update Following Public Hearing; Recording Available and FAQ Posted

The City of Shelbyville is addressing concerns following the January 5 City Council public hearing regarding the proposed annexation. The turnout for the meeting significantly exceeded expectations, resulting in crowded conditions, heat concerns, and early challenges with remote access for some residents attempting to join virtually.

City officials recognize that many residents left frustrated and want to be clear: the experience did not meet the standard Shelbyville residents deserve. Citizens deserve a comfortable environment, reliable access, and a fair opportunity to participate, particularly in discussions of this significance.

“We understand why people are upset,” the City stated. “Public participation matters, and our residents deserve better than what they experienced. We are acknowledging that and fixing it moving forward.”

Recording Available & Minutes in Process

The full YouTube livestream recording is intact and available for viewing.
Official meeting minutes are currently being transcribed and will be reviewed for approval at the January 21, 2026 City Council meeting.

Immediate Improvements Moving Forward

The City is taking the following steps to improve access, participation, and transparency:

  • Larger Venues: Future high-interest public hearings will be held in larger, climate-controlled, ADA-accessible facilities.
  • Reliable Virtual Access: Streaming platforms will be pre-tested, actively monitored, and supported with dedicated on-site technology resources to ensure participation tools function properly.
  • Clearer Public Communication: Information, documentation, and engagement opportunities will be centralized and easy to find.

Centralized Public Information Resource

To support transparency and provide residents with clear, accurate information, the City has launched a dedicated information page containing:

  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Meeting recording
  • Timeline and next steps
  • Details on how to share additional public comment
  • Ongoing updates

Residents are encouraged to visit:

This page will continue to serve as the single source of truth throughout the process.

Commitment to the Community

The City of Shelbyville remains committed to improving communication, supporting informed public dialogue, and ensuring residents have meaningful opportunities to engage.

“We value our community’s passion, their involvement, and their expectation that their voices be heard. We are taking that responsibility seriously and are committed to restoring confidence in the process.”
