Knox Box Program

Local fire departments frequently respond to calls involving seniors and disabled individuals who have fallen and are unable to get up. Gaining access to locked homes often requires damaging property, delaying care. To address this issue, Johnson and Shelby County Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) has partnered with several local area fire departments to provide a Knox Box to those in need.  This program provides emergency response to reach key access faster without damage to the property.

Knox Boxes are secure, locked containers that hold a home’s key, accessible only by the local fire department. This system allows first responders to enter homes quickly without causing damage.

Residents can apply for the program through Shelby Senior Services. Other homeowners can also purchase Knox Boxes and register them with their local fire department. The initiative ensures faster emergency responses, minimizes property damage, and enhances peace of mind for vulnerable residents.
